Professor Nan Guan is a Professor and Associate Head in the Department of Computer Science at City University of Hong Kong. He earned BEng and MEng degrees from Northeastern University, China, before receiving his PhD from Uppsala University, Sweden, in 2013. His dissertation, “New Techniques for Building Timing-Predictable Embedded Systems,” examined methods for improving the predictability of embedded computing platforms. Before joining CityU, he worked at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Northeastern University, China.

Professor Guan’s research spans the theoretical and practical dimensions of real-time and embedded computing. His interests include real-time scheduling and timing analysis, multiprocessor and multicore systems, cyber-physical systems, and the Internet of Things. He combines analytical research with systems development and industry collaboration to address the requirements of time-critical computing platforms. His current research activities include real-time intelligence on edge and device platforms, autonomous driving systems, real-time robotic operating systems, and LLM-aided system design.

His research contributions have received sustained recognition from the embedded and real-time systems communities. His honours include the ACM SIGBED Early Career Researcher Award in 2020 and the EDAA Outstanding Dissertation Award in 2014, together with best and outstanding paper awards from venues including RTSS, DATE, ACM e-Energy, ISORC, EMSOFT, RTAS, and CODES+ISSS. He has also made extensive professional-service contributions, including roles as General Chair of RTAS 2022, Program Chair of RTAS 2021, Track Chair of RTSS 2023, and Program Co-Chair of RTCSA 2023. He has served on the Executive Committee of the IEEE Technical Committee on Real-Time Systems since 2020 and the Steering Committee of EMSOFT since 2015.

Professor Guan serves as Chair of the IEEE Council on Electronic Design Automation (CEDA) Hong Kong Chapter and is a CALAS Team Advisor. Through his academic leadership, research, and professional service, he contributes to the advancement of dependable, efficient, and intelligent embedded computing systems.
