Welcome Syrus from NJUPT to CALAS!

Please join us in welcoming Syrus (Yiran SHAO), an FYP student from CityUHK Qingdao Research Institute and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NJUPT), to CALAS.

Syrus is a Year 4 bridging student from NJUPT who is currently based at the CityUHK Qingdao Research Institute. He joins CALAS under the supervision of Prof. Ray C. C. Cheung and will receive guidance from Dr. Yang Hao in Qingdao.

His background spans robotics platforms, embedded systems, and system prototyping. He has participated in RoboMaster, RoboCup, and the National Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest, and was a finalist in MCM/ICM. As project leader for a provincial innovation and entrepreneurship programme, he developed an edge-computing composite wheeled-legged robot and gained hands-on experience in microcontroller firmware, CAN-bus motor control, edge model deployment, and real-time control debugging.

For his final-year project and upcoming research, Syrus is developing a custom RISC-V coprocessor for low-bit acceleration of action-prediction kernels in lightweight Vision-Language-Action models, such as SmolVLA. His work aims to combine algorithm quantization with custom hardware architecture for low-latency, real-time inference on edge robotic systems.

We are delighted to welcome Syrus to CALAS and look forward to his contributions in computer architecture, digital system design, reconfigurable computing, and embodied AI.
